NEW STUFF (more Dirty....)

Lucy and the Rats
Girl
13 June 2016

It's the summer of 2015. Lucy has been in London for a year and is bored of playing guitar at home by herself. She needs a band badly so she assembles together a bunch of deadbeats and outcasts from London's punk rock underworld and starts rehearsing. Manu, Mike and Joe, who were together in Michael Jackson, become the Rats. Why not? How could you mess up such simple songs? Lo and behold, the invention works! The melodies become power pop tunes and after a few rehearsals (if you could call it that) they start recording the songs. There is nobody quite like them; some have mentioned the Bangles, others Blondie, but neither is exactly right.

It is terribly difficult to sound fresh and new when every note, every chord, and every lyric have been played somewhere by someone. Lucy's beautiful melodies and delicate vocals don't just sit on top of a punk rock backbeat. The vocals and the instrumentation complement each other perfectly. "Girl" has a jangly, '60s sound to it, while "Lose My Mind" more of a '70s power pop feel a la the Beat or Blondie. Audiences love it.

It took no time to find record labels interested; Monster Zero released their first 7", "Girl"; Surfin' Ki the second, "This Situation". Dirty Water took on the digital and promotion of the lot. With the records in their hands the band has a week in Spain in June with tours in Greece, Italy and South America on the horizon.

This band is going places.

#Stereotypes Video Drops Now

A letter from Philippe Prosper, the artist behind #Stereotypes

To the person about to hit play,

I wrote this song and made this video as a social commentary to impact Americans and to start a dialogue in pop culture. In light of recent events like the Orlando massacre and the many instances of police brutality based on superficial associations, I wanted to highlight how we stereotype one another.

Stereotypes are the making of racism and hate crimes as they reduce individuals to mostly inaccurate caricatures of their assumed cultural contexts. Much of my life social constructs propagated by the media have tried to pressure me to confine myself into a caricature of who society perceived that I was. Sound familiar? I think we've all been inaccurately classified based on our appearance at one time or another. Coming to America from a non-American background (first generation American), I never identified with any of the stereotypes in our culture and I don't believe that they can accurately represent any individual. I'm all for making light of what divides us, but it goes without saying that negative stereotypes also have ramifications. Stereotypes are damaging and sometimes even end in unjustified hate crimes.

That's the point of this video. Sometimes it takes satire to point out our own ridiculousness. If the images in this rap video make you feel uncomfortable and offended, I made my point.

Stereotypes are a lazy, biased, superficial understanding of the general dynamics of a people group at best; and at worst, they confine the individual to an image most often imposed by external parties that do not have a native perspective. In light of the racial socio-political climate in America and the numerous racially charged deaths, I want to highlight our own prejudices towards one another and ignite a dialogue that reshapes and reexamines the stereotypes that divide all of us. It's time for a family talk America. Brace yourself, put on your thinking cap and press play.

Thank you for watching,

Philippe Prosper

Stooges Storm Sin City

Anne Moore, Creem, July 1970

(While the Stooges were out on the West Coast to do their second album, they decided to play a couple of gigs. The first was a gala press reception at the Whisky A-Go-Go, with wall-to-wall media, including Andy Warhol and entourage. Andy split in the middle of the set, why no one really knows, but it definitely wasn't because he had any trouble with old wounds (at least not physically).

From: www.stopsmartmetersGeorgia.Org

Dear Friends,

This letter is to ask you to please contact the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC) to ask that the opt out fee for "smart" meters be reduced to zero. Below are the reasons why and contact information. Thank you in advance for reading and reaching out!

The following is from Sarah Breitenback in Stateline (Pew Charitable Trusts - http://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2016/02/05/amid-health-privacy-fears-states-are-letting-people-reject-smart-meters): "Shortly after Joe Davidson moved into his Cincinnati apartment, he noticed his joints were achy and he wasn't sleeping well. Then he needed two root canals."

A doctor certified that Davidson was sensitive to the radio frequency of the meter and it was removed by his power company after he lobbied the Ohio Public Utilities Commission. Slowly, he started to feel better.

"Davidson is among a small but outspoken group of people who say the radio frequencies coming from so-called smart meters installed in their homes are making them sick. The wireless devices - designed to measure gas and electricity consumption and help consumers save money - have other critics, such as privacy advocates who argue they could violate customers' privacy and consumer advocates who complain they could lead to higher utility bills.

"Driven by these concerns, legislators in several states have moved to give consumers options when it comes to installing smart meters in their homes."

There are utilities in California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington State that have a free opt out for smart meters, and many in Georgia would like a free opt out from Georgia Power. They are already in the forefront by replacing a smart meter with an analog - the kind of electric meter that doesn't emit radiofrequency radiation - for free (call 888-660-5890 to make the request). Many cannot afford the fee, and should not have to choose between safety and the necessities of life.

Not only do many utilities have free opt outs across the country, but even more charge only five or ten dollars. Still, no one should be charged to opt out, since smart meters emit a type of radiation which has been found to be harmful, to the point of causing tumors of the brain and heart (please see below), with average exposure. And these signals are so strong that they can, according to the company that makes the "smart" meters Georgia Power uses, go right through a manhole cover!

Arizona has rescinded their opt out fee, and now do not charge anything to have a safe analog meter. Many are considering suing to get their fees already paid back. Now that a government-funded scientific study, done by the National Toxicology Program, came out in May of 2016, revealing that RF can cause cancer, I believe others will follow suit.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio said that "American Electric Power [AEP] must demonstrate the financial benefits of so-called ;smart meters' before it can begin charging a fee" to customers who choose not to use them, Ohio utility regulators ruled today.

"We find that customers should not have to pay for advanced meter opt-out service if they are not actually receiving a reduction in costs resulting from the operational efficiencies created by AEP Ohio's gridSMART Program," the panel said in the decision (http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2016/04/27/aep-must-prove-smart-meters-save-customers-money-before-charging-to-opt-out.html).

And you may remember that the attorney general of Connecticut, George Jepsen, said that smart meters will only save a customer about $11 over a twenty year period. That is not worth having a cancer-causing, fire-starting, bill-raising, totally hackable digital smart meter on one's home. James Woolsey, ex-head of the CIA, said we should not call our grid smart, but that it is a stupid grid, because smart meters make it so hackable.

As mentioned above, a recent study done by the US National Toxicology Program showed that radiofrequency radiation (RF), the same type of radiation emitted by "smart" meters and cell phones, can cause tumors of the brain and heart. Some other health complaints include insomnia, heart palpitations, ringing in the ears, and even seizures! Children are especially susceptible.

When asked about the safety of having a "smart" meter on the outside of a wall at one's home, a power-related official said "Well, you're not sleeping in that room, are you?"! More information about the extreme dangers of digital meters is available online, including videos of the damage they can do/have done.

This month, on July 19th, the Georgia Public Service Commission will decide whether or not to raise, lower, or abolish the $19 "opt out" fee. Please contact them to let them know that it is unfair for people to have to pay any amount of money to escape harm from their own electric meter, meters that should never have been installed in the first place. These meters were never tested for human safety, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) statement that they are safe is based on their heat output, not on the radiation they emit!

Here's contact information for the Georgia Public Service commissioners:

General email address: gapsc@psc.state.ga.us
General phone number: 800-282-5813
Snail mail: 244 Washington Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30334-9052

Again, thank you in advance for your help, and please be assured that Stop Smart Meters Georgia will keep fighting to get safe meters back on our homes and businesses. We all have a right to the peaceful enjoyment of our property, and to not be constantly under the threat of serious health concerns, fires, hacking, and sky-high bills that can accompany the installation of these not-so-smart meters.

THIS IS A PRE-ORDER! ALL ITEMS WILL SHIP ON OR AROUND AUGUST 26, 2016!

False Readings On is the new album from renowned experimental composer, Eluvium. Its creation was originally inspired by themes of cognitive dissonance in modern society. By its conclusion it had become a mirror rather than a magnifying glass, evolving into an hour-long meditation on self-doubt, anxiety, and separation from one's self. There is an emotional lucidity and melodic ingenuity to Eluvium's music that has made him increasingly stand out from the sea of ambient artists that his earlier albums no doubt helped inspire. Sounding like an orchestra ceaselessly performing even as it sinks beneath an ocean of distortions and tape noise - with the occasional operatic voice piercing the surface - False Readings On is assuredly the most daring, dynamic, and distinct album of his luminous career.

NEW RELEASE: For The Moon - The Driftwood Manor (f0133)

We are pleased to announce the release of this fine new album from Irish Alt Folk band The Driftwood Manor...

Irish alt-folk act The Driftwood Manor mix Irish traditional music and folk with a range of other influences, from alternative rock to Eastern music and electronica. The band have released three albums and six EPs since 2008 and were voted in The Irish Times' Breakthrough Acts of the Year for 2011 following the release of their second album 'The same figure (leaving)'. Three English tours in 2014 and 2015 saw the band play to audiences in cities such as London, Bristol and Brighton.

The Driftwood Manor also performed twice at 2014's Electric Picnic in Ireland and were among the headline acts at The Bath Folk Festival in August in the UK that year. The band's last album, 2014's Of the Storm, was voted in the Folk Radio UK Albums of the Year for 2014 and received exceptional reviews across the board. In 2015, the band again performed at Electric Picnic and a host of other festivals while touring extensively. During this time they also recorded their latest album, For the Moon, which is being released on Folkwit Records in the summer of 2016 with the singles Fraction of a Wolf and Fire and Brimstone being released in advance.

"Their music features a mass of influences but throughout you find a common ground of rich harmonies and striking yet simple melodies. For some reason I couldn't shake off the sound of Gay and Terry Woods The Woods Band which strode that path somewhere between traditional, folk rock and a healthy dosage of seventies psychedelia. Comparing The Driftwood Manor to such a band is also a token of the value I place on their music. I really do believe they are something very special."
- Folk Radio UK

"The Driftwood Manor have made what is highly likely to be the finest record to find its way out of the thickets of Irish folk this year."
- Entertainment.ie

"Eddie Keenan is a hugely talented singer-songwriter, contributing to the ongoing development of the folk tradition in Ireland."
- The Galway Advertiser

Ello Ello?

An Interview with Rachel Dreimiller, via Scene 360

Rachel Dreimiller's online moniker is @spookyghoul and she describes herself as a "Gothic Granny" and "creepster." Her embroidery art is heavy on skulls and bony hands, a juxtaposition that turns a typically homey medium modern and edgy.

Interviewer Alexi Ueltzen (@alexi) is Ello's Community Evangelist. If she's not at the office, she's probably swimming, getting muddy with her dogs or baking cookies. Seriously. The best cookies.

View the full interview on illusion.scene360.com.

Alexi: How did you get into creating embroidered art?
Rachel: I have been drawing and doodling for most of my life. I had given up on art in general for a few years, because I was not getting any real sense of accomplishment from anything I was making. I started looking for other creative outlets and stumbled on crocheting and embroidering as something new a few years ago. I've always gone back to drawing and thought of embroidery as another means to illustrate. I often try to teach myself too many things at once, so I ran with it once I picked it up. It took me a few years of experimenting to fall into the style that I try to stay within now.

Alexi: Your Etsy shop is called "Your Gothic Granny" and your Ello handle is "spookyghoul" and lots of your subject matter is a little dark. Have you always been into creepy things?
Rachel: Yes, I have always been some sort of creepster and have enjoyed the spooky life it brings. Growing up I wanted to be a mortician, and loved looking through old anatomy illustrations. I enjoy looking through Memento Mori works and draw most of my inspiration from all the different styles. The spooky aesthetic is great, and one I really enjoy. And I do like to be reminded of my own mortality, I think it makes it easier to enjoy this life. Remembering that this is it, this is the one life I've got, makes it easier for me to devote time to what makes me happy, and to be thankful for that happiness.

Alexi: Most of your work is textile-based. Are there any other mediums or techniques you'd like to experiment with in the future?
Rachel: I love drawing and painting and have always doodled in my spare time. I would love to try quilting and printmaking soon, and making my own stamps for the wrappings of my work. Like I said before, I love learning new things and can often start too many new projects at once, so for now I am trying to focus on embroidery before I move on to anything else. We'll see how long that lasts.
