UNDERGROUND RATES IM SERVICES
I've just finished a three month old survey and
experiment using the major instant messenging
services to test performance, reliability, and
security.
I didn't have time or the means to test them
all, literally, when you include the open
source instant message software, the number
of available packages is well over thirty. So
for the sake of time, fun, and sanity, I tried
ICQ (both the full and lite services), AOL
instant messenger (AIM), Yahoo Messenger, MSN
Messenger, and Jabber. True, there are many
more IM clients, but I had to keep perspective
so five was about all my collective conscious
could manage.
To make a long story short, AOL, ICQ full
version and Yahoo were the least secure. I
found that AIM was so bad there is no way in
hell I'd keep that thing on my desktop. The
worst thing about it was the bots. Don't know
about them? Well, there are ones for each service,
it just so happens AIM's ones were the most pesky.

To put it in a nutshell, there are hundreds of
styles of bots, and they've been around and continue
to evolve. AIM and ICQ full version seemed to be
the most affected, though one could design a bot
to do so much more, with or without IM integration.
There are some that can ride basic TCP streams, and
for those, with that protocol so basic, current firewall
services will not protect you. Anyway, back to
IM testing.
ICQ lite wasn't affected nearly as bad as the full ICQ
client. Along with Jabber, ICQ lite was the best
choice for IM. Yahoo and MSN, with their intense
integration with Internet Explorer browser, should be
avoided all all costs. Even a novice programmer can
throw stuff together that will combine at the point
of engine execution to sneak in on your network
using these two services. Both firms though are in the
process of making major improvements, so it is said.
Like I said, stick with Jabber, or ICQ Lite!

long on this feature and like 10 people use it. :-)
Just kidding. Lots of out-of-town people use it
I guess us Athens folk are still learning how to
use the interweb.
The AMN is migrating towards 100% standards
compliant design. This means some older browsers
or cracked-out browsers like Web TV or AOL might
not display the AMN correctly.
If you're still using Netscape 4.0 then UPDATE for
goodness sakes. That browser came out in 1996.
That was eight years ago! Eight YEARS! Common
people!
I suggest using the latest versions of Microsoft
Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape 7.1, or Opera
to view the AMN.

The new album is M83's powerful follow up to their recent album

RESIDENTS - "Commercial" CD & DVD - Release Date: November 2
Mute will release the 25th Anniversary Special Edition of the landmark
1980 album plus a DVD. In 1980 The Residents created four short films
based on Commercial Album songs. Long considered as ground-breaking
music videos, these films are now part of the permanent collection of
the Museum of Modern Art in New York. To celebrate the 25th anniversary
of the Commercial Album, the DVD will both compliment and complete the
project with an amazing collection of 56 one-minute films based on the
original 40 Commercial Album songs. In order to produce this large
number of films, in addition to themselves, The Residents have
assembled an outstanding group of 42 visual artists from around the
world. Working in various forms ranging from animation, live action,
and puppetry to drawing, photography and sculpture, the disc is a
virtual film festival in miniature. In addition The DVD has an
innovative game-like interface that allows viewers to explore a maze
in the process of viewing the videos.

LESBIANS ON ECSTASY: CD LAUNCH, UPCOMING RELEASE, TOUR DATES
Lesbians on Ecstasy launched their debut CD release Friday, October
15 at Le Locall, 7154 St.Urbain in Montreal. Also performing
were Toronto's Kids on TV, with DJ Slutsky and Hamburger Helper
spinning wax and silicon.

Montreal's Lesbians on Ecstasy. L.O.E. hijack the back catalogue of
popular lesbian anthems, dragging them kicking and screaming out of
the folk festivals and onto the drugged up revelry of the dance floor.
