OBITUARY FOR EL DUCE
Eldon Hoke, also know as El Duce, a fixture on the Los Angeles Entertainment
scene for the last 20 years was killed Saturday evening, April 19, in
Riverside, CA. His death was the result of being hit by a train in a state
of alcoholic intoxication.
Mr. Hoke was best known as the drummer and lead singer of the rock
group the
Mentors. He rose to national prominence in 1985 as a result of the U.S.
Senate ( P.M.R.C. ) hearings regarding "obscene lyrics" in rock
music, which
named publicly the Mentors as the worst exponent of such lyrics in music.
In addition to his musical career Mr. Hoke also was employed frequently
as a
bit player or extra in many motion picture, music video, and television
productions. His comic visage and friendly manner made him a show business
natural.
Recently Mr. Hoke had appeared on the Jerry Springer Show in a show
devoted
to Shock Rock, and in the National Enquirer and other tabloids domestically
and internationally regarding his claim that he was approached by Courtney
Love to kill Kurt Cobain.
The last musical performance by Mr. Hoke was given on Friday, April
18th, at
Al's Bar in Downtown Los Angeles.
Mr. Hoke was born on March 24, 1958 in Seattle, Washington. He is survived
in the by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hoke of Seattle, Wa,
a
brother, Steven Hoke, of Seattle, a sister, Mrs. Christina Sherrod, of
Renton, WA, a sister, Mrs. Annetta Boggs, of Los Angeles, an uncle, David
Hoke, an uncle, Charles Saltviet, or Portland, and an aunt, Esther Moreland,
of Woodland Hills. The loss is also grieved by his lifelong friends and
group members of the Mentors, Eric Carlson of Hollywood, CA and Steve Broy,
of Riverside, CA. Donations in his memory can be made to the Salvation
Army.

Some comments and reviews regarding the debut promo released last year
in April.
"This three song demo is mindblowing on a lot of levels. The
songwriting ability and musical execution of the disc bely the youth
of the band. Each song is superbly arranged. I won't try to compare
them to any other bands because they truly have their own sound."
- Erik Welty's Progressive Metal List,
http://www.onr.com/progress/timsrev.html
"I have a feeling that the next chapter with this band will be
BIG"
- Scream Magazine, March 1996
"Timescape possess a sound that is all their own. I can't really
compare them with anyone I've heard before. Timescape write very good
memorable melodies. This is a good band with lots of room to grow...."
- The Progress Report, August 1996
"For such a young band, they have an extremely mature sense of
dynamics. Timescape have already achieved a unique sound. Check them
out now, so you can say you knew them before they hit"
- Au Contraire, May 1996
"Keep an eye out for these guys, ....they could be a force to
reckon
with."
-Chronicles of Chaos, # 12, 1996
"3 tracks CD that will for sure secure a deal with a major label
to
this young and extremely technical Swedish metal band."
- Baldrick's Hell's Kitchen, issue 5, 1996
"The band blends together standard progressive complexity and
technical skill with memorable songwriting. ....the music is superb,
somewhat in the vibe of Conception and countrymen Tad Morose, but with
an even more unique presentation. All in all a tremendous CD..."
- Ascendant Strains, August 1996
"Japanese like technical rock like Dream Theater and It Bites
etc. I
wish some Japanese record companies help them to debut."
- Shuichi "Kino'89" Kindshita.
http://www.st.rim.or.jp/~kino1989/BrightHopes/timescape.html
"This could be easily by one of those MTV bands US puts out, and
this
is meant as a compliment."
- Inferno magazine, # 7, 1996,
http://www.dse.nl/inferno/issue7/timescap.html
"The choruses of the last two songs are instantly memorable -
a
difficult feat in the realm of prog metal - and none of the tight
songs drift off into the common pitfall of time change limbo. This is
indeed impressive stuff for a debut demo. Look for this band to make a
mark."
- SFK (Strictly For Konnoiseurs) Zine, September 1996,
http://members.aol.com/thecompany/index.htm
"...excellent musicianship and a faultless production are displayed
on
these three songs." "....Timescape definitely has what it takes
- a
very good band indeed."
- BNR metal pages,
http://www-cse.ucsd.edu/users/bruss/Metal/pages/demos.html
"...from soft rock instrumental sensitivity to melodic hard rock
guitar power and bridges, but it merges in the form of a slick,
progressive whole."
- Geoff Wilbur's Renegade Newsletter, May 1996
"...the musicianship is outstanding. I'm sure that with some live
work
under their belts and a few more songs, they could become the next
Dream Theater!"
-Noise Level Critical Zine,
http://www.netcentral.co.uk/~cracker/mat/nlc.htm
"This is a very impressive release. The only way I could describe
them is technical, melodic, jazzmetal. Every musician on this disc is
extremely accomplished. ...and really good songwriting. Even though
there are only 3 songs on this disc they are all very memorable. You
will not be dissapointed with this CD get one today!!!!!"
-Underground Metal Zine, http://norden1.com/~hkolb/umetal.html
"You have to put Timescape on top of the list for northern european
bands to watch; not only do they sound good, their music has some
meaning...The Berlin Brothers and company have what it takes for a
good jam... Such breath has been needed in metal for some time; it
takes a very good band to open such doors.....go ahead, let these boys
in, enjoy the music..."
-Underground Sound, 10/31/96,

We look forward to hearing from all of You in the near future.

Doin' Laundry
As with most long-term couples, Mark and Mary have their own pet phrases
for
everyday sayings. For example, they call having sex "doing laundry."
One night, Mark came home late from work and Mary was already in bed
asleep.
He attempted to wake her up and asked "Honey, how about doing a little
laundry?" Mary grunted and told him she was too sleepy and to go away.
He
said, "You don't have to be awake and it won't take too long."
She ignored him so he went and brushed his teeth and got ready for bed.
As
he was doing this, Mary had been thinking in her half-awake stupor about
the
prospect of having sex and began to get turned on.
When Mark climbed into bed, she turned over and said, "Maybe we
could fit a
little laundry in, baby," to which he replied, "Oh that's OK,
sweetie. It
was a small load so I did it by hand."

Review: Neo-Punk from San Diego
Band: Second Class
Tape: "Demo Songs" (1997)
W 5/21/97 by Camille Juliana (Mars Cat@aol.com)
I am taking a course in Demo Production and a fellow classmate
gave me his band's demo tape to review. And here it goes out to
3/4 million readers! Ah, the electronic age! This band is an
offering of fresh, energetic punk with lots of Brit influences.
"Second Class" is out of the San Diego area and is composed of
Jay Luckey (Guitar & Vocals), Aaron Swanton (Lead Guitar &
Vocals), Rob Crist (Bass, working through his Messiah complex--
just kidding, wanted to see if you were paying attention there),
and Dave Shojai (Drums). The tape is pretty crude so the sound
quality isn't at its best, but through the rawness one can sense
a real talent. These guys are kinda young (Jay is the oldest at
17), and their youthfulness is somewhat reflected in the vocals.
But that should progress with a little seasoning. These guys
have an energy and sincerity that I really like. Jay tells me
their influences include Clash, Ramones, Operation Ivy. The
Brit/early punk influence definitely shows in their music and
vocals, but it seems genuine, not contrived. Even though they
are youngish, some of the band members have been doing this for
five years. They seem serious and committed. I like that in a
band. These guys are looking for bookings for area
shows/parties. They are intending to tour the West Coast this
summer. Second Class would fit in nicely in any punk-oriented
lineup. I hear they put on a good show. Contact Jay at (619)
986-6733.

PUNK KARAOKE AT THE DRAGONFLY, HOLLYWOOD, CA
Only in LA! A couple of weeks ago I was browsing through the LA
Weekly and saw an ad for a "PUNK KARAOKE" night at one of our
Hollywood clubs, the Dragonfly. It looked very intriguing, and
the announced participation of Bob Mothersbaugh of DEVO, a
long-time fave band of mine, was enough to totally resolve my
interest. (These guys did brilliant pieces like "Mongoloid" in
the 70s, for gawdsake: that was sufficient to achieve the
"ever-cool" award in my books). I went, I saw, I ended up
actually participating on-stage myself! First up, however, were
The Ziggens, out of Huntington Beach, "the best band in the whole
world", according to a fan/friend. These guys appeared in full
Canadian Mountie uniforms, very cewl indeed or should I say hot,
cus they were gradually off'ed during the set. Kind of surf punk
in the vein of Shadowy Men... meets cowboy poets. You figure it
out. Definitely entertaining. Next up were "Me First & the
Gimme Gimmes", punkers from various bands who specialize in
hardcore butcherings of soft rock classics by the likes of the
Carpenters, Denver, and Manilow. Very fun. Then, at long last
(11:15 PM) on to the main event: Punk Karaoke!!!!! A listing of
30 punk classics was put up on the wall. Bands included the best
from those days: Ramones, Black Flag, X, Circle Jerks, Dead
Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Clash, Minor Threat. Members
of the audience got to sign up for a particular number, and
booklets with lyrics were given to singers. I did back-up vocals
for a couple of DEVO classics: "Mongoloid", naturally, and
"Uncontrollable Urge". Of course, the cewlest thing about this
whole KARAOKE deal was that the participants were backed by
various members of the ORIGINAL bands who did these songs. Can
you say: "I am living my punk dream?" Just incredible. Band
members included Bob Mothersbaugh of DEVO (a crowd fave), Eric
Melvin of NOFX, Greg Hetson of Circle Jerks/Bad Religion, and
Derek O'Brien, ex-Social Distortion/ex-Agent Orange/now Extra
Fancy. Some Karaoke-ers were obvious pros, ("guest" singers
included Kim Shattuck of the Muffs, Darren from Goldfinger, and a
member of Face to Face), but even the amateurs did a fine job.
The nice sound system at the club helped. But it was the festive
"anything goes" spirit of the event that made it fun for everyone.
This promises, according to the club, to be a regular feature,
depending on the availability of various band members. Next date,
tenatively, is July 29. A very fun time was had by all. Hey, it's LA!

Oh Great just what we need another Christian in a bubble, cant tell you
what God has specifically told you to do with your life but I can say
that he commands Christians to make disciples of men. ( I have seen
countless opportunities missed because of this logic - to some extent I
understand and agree with where you are coming from (being like minded
DOES make things easier but it's not always better (you just might learn
something from a non-christian perspective)Just because someone is not
a
Christian AND they are Still Willing to make music with you in itself
may be a great sign that they trust you and are more open to your
perspective (read-discipling) better that than you treating unbelievers
as a project that must be accomplished (not saying thats how you
personally approach this but thats generally the way it goes and yes I
speak from experience) Regardless who's to say that your non-christian
drummer (if your ever lucky enough to have one around) may decide to ask
someone from the audience (or You) to pray with/for him?? Or would that
humiliate you? having a fellow band member in sin?(sorry it's something
WE all deal with (on or off the stage) Not tryin to be rude (still have
some rough edges and yes God knows me too!) But people are a helluva lot
more impressed by what they see in a persons life than by what is
preached at em. Give the heathens a break and take em home for
supper,(thats what Christ would do) dont discriminate against em.
Later....
