A C U M E N / I R O N L U N G s t u d i o s h i t . . . 1 9 9 5

One day, Acumen and Iron Lung met at the park to talk about why they
decided to do such a darn fool thing as to record their albums together AND
back to back. When they couldn't think of a single thing, they got out of
the sandbox and left for Chicago Trax, but not before pushing a few kids
into their little sand piles. This is their story...

November 9 - The claypeople show up at the Acumen compound completely un-
announced at about six in the morning. The boys in Acumen beat them up for
a while, and then everyone had a smoke. A couple days later we played
together at the Dome Room in Chicago, a beautiful event that called to mind
the glory days of this past spring during the biggest stadium tour ever,
which netted each band about $37 bucks. Anyway, "Join in the Murderous
Chant" was played out nicely for the crowd of 12,000 at shows end. How did
we fit that many people into a 1000 person-capacity club? Dont ask us such
silly questions; it angers us.

November 10 - Acumen stuff ready to go. Today, however, is the first time
either the Claypeople or us have heard each others' contributions for the
Iron Lung Corp. project. Only two songs, the earlier mentioned N-ebb tune,
and the grueling 22 minute version of "Witchita," the song that brought
forth the seed of the ILC, have been heard by all. Dumb ass song BUT
SERIOUSLY, that was cool. Both bands reacted well to each others' material,
and many warm glances passed between Dan and Jason as they attempted to
sing every song in soaring falsettos and baritones. After a swift beating
by Nez Pierce, Brian Justice, Jamie Kidd and Ethan Alien of the Iron Lung
Corp, they got their shit together and played some loud seventies rock.

November 17 - a really cool band from Phoenix, or Mesa actually, is it Mesa
Jamie?

-Phoenix.

awesome. anyway they kick total ass and are the closest thing you can have
to a musical enema with a giant smile on your face. Contact us if you want
to check out their stuff. It was produced by Neil Kernan, who produced the
new Skrew record as well. We guarantee N17's brutality.

November 18 - Recording starts. With Jamie Kidd at the helm, the quick and
painful process of laying all bass and drum tracks to 19 songs in less than
a week. No problem, you understand. Ethan does a LOT of non-pharmacueticals
and weighs about 90 pounds. Our time slots are the sick-slot hours of
midnight to noon, and our alter-egos known as 16 Volt had the kinder,
gentler hours of noon to midnight. (Re-con note: Chase's bands take their
porn VERY seriously) We leave them a present in the studio on the first
day, a nice present.

November 24 - Laughs galore as the rest of the tracks for the ILC record
are finished, and the Claypeople leave us. Dan endured much pain through
the long hard evenings due to his illness. The rest of us, including Dan,
smoked way too much of anything we could get our lips on. Our concluding
thoughts on the ILC tracks are that we plan to redefine classic rock as the
planet knows it, and Brian looks good in red and white spandex pants. It's
good, we think, and if Chase doesn't laugh too hard, he might even put it
out. Thank god for that Nitzer Ebb thing.

December 3 - Acumen time. The studio is a lot quieter, and work is easier
to accomplish without what seemed to be 15 people in the control room at
all times.

We noticed the calm was due more to the fact that the songs we were
recording now had been played over and over throughout the year, a couple
for a couple years and one since basically the dawn of Acumen, entitled
"Candy Prowled." The Iron Lung material was rehearsed for 5 days as opposed
to 5 years. This, however is good, since there was a slight worry as to
whether or not both albums would sound too similar due to the fact they
were recorded and mixed at such close proximity. The difference in
comfortability factors (?) gives one a rougher, more improvisational feel,
and the other a more controlled and linear one.

Two of the ILC tunes were rearranged and rewritten at approximately
24 and 3 hours prior to recording them. Yikes, I say.

The albums were then mixed in the same order. We here at Acucrack find
our new offering much better than the previous transmission. Our goal was
to put forth an even more schizophrenic album than the first, working more
melodic material into even more threatening electronics, and I think we
pulled it off. Some guy even came in and put a gun to my head and FORCED me
to change a fuck word to something else, saying it would be the biggest
radio tune available next year and that Gloria Estafan wanted to release an
entire record of its covers.

I swear to god, no foolin. We've also decided that "Mike" will be
released on the record as a bonus track, possibly a different mix than
what appeared on the Fifth Colvmn sampler "Forced Cranial Removal." And,
yes, there is another nine minute masturbatory number on there as well.

December 20 - (current) Hello and merry happy whatever. We are in the
final stages of editing. Both Fifth Colvmn and Reconstriction are pleased
with advance tapes and both releases slated for march/april release. As
always, distribution is the main battle and everyone is hard at work to
make sure these titles, Acumen's "Territory Means the Universe" and The
Iron Lung Corp.'s "Something for Little Timmy at Christmas" or "Witchita"
or "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" or "Ass Masters Vol. 1 Through 9"
or "Fully Equipped Dungeon" or "Crobar America" or just plain Iron Bung,
are easily accessable to all who are interested. As well as the Acucrack
record, Fifth Colvmn will be releasing the new Chemlab offering as well as
the its-about-time follow up for The Final Cut.

Reconstriction's new 16 Volt and Claypeople, as well as the beautiful
Collide will be available next year as well.

Please feel free to inquire about anything you wish through our
website and our e-ville number, acucrack@suba.com. Tell your mom I said hi,
and the next time you cum dont forget to shout "ILC IN THE MOTHERFUCKIN
HEYYOOOUSE!!!" Piece.

"If you were at this year's Summer Madness or Greenbelt festivals you may
have caught this engaging three-piece outfit from Belfast. Musically Flumox
are hard to define - `industrial grunge' falls short but is a beginning.
Hissing electronic hi-hats, pummelling guitars and throbbing bass grooves
are the order of the day as vocalist `Hilarious Dave McHilarious' (Flumox
obviously have a wacky sense of humour) places introspective lyrics over the
mix. The introspection also displays integrity as shown in the heartfelt
lyric of the final track: "This is not the time to fight/This is the time to
forgive/This is not the time to die/This is the time to live". Having been
together for less than a year Flumox have convered a considerable distance
in a short time and with the aid of a gifted producer they could come up
with the goods. In the meantime get your ears around this five-track
offering."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

 A GROTHESK HISTORY
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stephan Groth from Sarpsborg, Norway, was born in 1971. He grew up
in a very musical family, his father, Jan Groth, played in Aunt
Mary a well-known Norwegian blues-rock band in the 1960s. But
Stephan caught interest in electronic music rather than blues, and
     especially in EBM.

He once said that THE INVINCIBLE SPIRIT was one of his favourite groups, in
1987 they released the masterpiece Current News on Technodrome International
(pre Zoth Ommog), this could very well be the main influence for Stephan's
gothic techno. Other groups he rates high includes KRAFTWERK, THE YOUNG
GODS, HARD FLOOR, OMD, PSYCHE, VELVET UNDERGROUND,
DEAD CAN DANCE, TANGERINE DREAM, NEW ORDER, JOY DIVISION,
REGENERATOR and SVEN V€TH.

By the end of the 1980s he'd learned to handle the synths and keyboards well
enough to make music on his own: he took the artistname Grothesk.

In Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg, two towns very close to the swedish border,
the electronic movement first settled here in Norway...and Grothesk was a
major part of it. The label Tatra has always been looking for new and
exciting music, and in 1991 they signed up Grothesk as Apoptygma Berzerk.
Soon a 12" called Ashes To Ashes was released by this label.

Apoptygma's first claim for fame nationwide (except for the release on
Tatra) must have been as supporting act for THE YOUNG GODS in Oslo August 14
1992. At the concert Grothesk brought Anders Odden with him to play guitars
on "Burning Heretic". The Young Gods got so impressed by Anders that they
brought him along for their concert in Bergen the next day. Anders Odden is
best known from his days as guitarist in death-metal band CADAVER, from
Fredrikstad. CADAVER, which existed from 1988 until 1993, was the first
Norwegian band to sign with Earache Records and they released two albums:
Hallucinating Anxiety (1990) and ...In Pains (1992). Apoptygma also played
as supporting act for Die Krupps, at "St.Croix" in Fredrikstad, February 1
1993.

Musically Apoptygma Berzerk is somewhere in the techno soundscape, but often
strongly influenced by goth/EBM. So "gothic techno" sounds like a good
description of his music (if you remove the guitars from the latest
Cassandra Complex album, Sex & Death, you'll be pretty close to Apoptygma).

When the album Soli Deo Gloria was released, in November 1993, one of the
leading papers in Norway, Dagbladet, wrote a two page story on Apoptygma and
techno-music in its November 29 issue. To give a brief summary:

   * Grothesk say that he's a christian, but that he worships depression!

   * He calls himself "musically schizophrenic" because he's got everything
from Ace Of Base to Entombed in his record collection!!

   * According to Grothesk Soli Deo Gloria is a summary of work he's done
between 1990 and 1993, that's why the music ranges from pure pop to
     gothic techno.

   * Dagbladet also gave the album a very positive review, 5 out of 6.

   * Gothic Grothesk ?

In November 1994 Apoptygma Berzerk toured in Germany before returning to
Norway to throw a party on New Years Eve. While most other inhabitants of
Oslo made wishes for the new year Apoptygma Berzerk gathered a crowd of
body/ industrial fans at the new independent club So What! and gave a
memorable concert. Hopefully this can become a New Year's Eve tradition in
our otherwise so dull capital.

On May 4 1995 Apoptygma Berzerk played support together with Rancho Diablo
for NITZER EBB at So What! in Oslo. The concert was well attended and the
audience fairly satisfied with what Apoptygma Berzerk achieved. Like when
supporting The Young Gods in '92 Grothesk was joined by guitarist Anders
Odden on stage. During the half hour Apoptygma played they had time to
introduce the next single Non-stop Violence which show Apoptygma from a more
political side. The song is about the ongoing conflict in former Yugoslavia
and promise well for future Apoptygma- releases!

For a long time Per Aksel Lundgreen was the contact person and live member
of Apoptygma Berzerk, however in 1995 he decided to pursue his own career
with CRONOS TITAN. So now all fan mail should go directly to Grothesk on the
address below.

On September 30 Grothesk and Anders Odden arranged a techno workshop during
the event EUREKA '95 at Stovner Rockefabrikk in Oslo. For a couple of hours
they showed people how one uses samplers in electronic music. The entrance
was free so this and other stands at EUREKA '95 were pretty crowded.

Rev news as of December 28, 1995:

Greetings from Revelation HQ in sunny Huntington Beach. In the aftermath
of the Simpson trial we have resumed working. Despite what you may have
heard, only seven Revelation employees were actually selected to be members
of the jury. The rest of our staff just thought the word "sequestering"
sounded cool and checked into a Motel Six. Sorry to anyone whose mail
order stuff is a bit late. Things in the warehouse have settled down after
catching (and safely releasing) a rat behind the storage racks. John
Nutcher comments "From the droppings and musty scent we knew a weasel or
something was sniffing around back there, but we figured it was just
another major-label executive."

NEW RELEASES:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
FARSIDE self titled 7" ($4.00)/Cass ($5.00)/CD ($6.00) Revelation:45
Long awaited new music from Southern California's best melodic band (we're
not biased), boasting a front cover handsome enough to be displayed beside
your own family portrait. Years ahead of the pack, Farside continues their
tradition with this four song feast of overdriven power-pop. Catchy tunes,
raging guitars, genuine emotion - what else could you want? CD and
cassette have two bonus acoustic tracks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEXAS IS THE REASON s/t 7" ($4.00)/Cass ($5.00)/CD ($6.00) Revelation:47
The sound is as huge as the state. This band includes former members of
Resurrection, Shelter, 108, Fountainhead, and Copper, as well as the writer
and publisher of Anti-Matter fanzine, and still somehow manages to be only
four people. Only half of them are Misfits fans. If you haven't already
heard about Texas is the Reason here's the scoop- they're gonna be really
big. They just wrapped up a US tour with Shift (avoiding the state of
Texas for obvious reasons) and are presently recording a new album. In the
meantime this three-song EP packs more punch than most bands can muster for
a full length.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both Farside and Texas in the Reason are tearing up college radio as we speak.

Some updates on other bands that matter:

Civ "All Twisted" 7 inch out now. The title track is a turbocharged cover
of the classic written by seminal NYC punk band Kraut. The b side, "Do
Something," is a flat-out shredder reminiscent of Gorilla Biscuits' own
"Start Today." In December we'll be releasing the vinyl version of Civ's
LP "Set Yer Goals" so don't bow down to the CD mongers yet. Buy it on good
old petroleum-based vinyl. Look closely and you may be able to actually
see the Revelation logo on this version! Civ is currently on the road with
Smile.

Into Another's new LP, "Seemless," is now available on vinyl from
Revelation. They've blasted the envelope on this one, with massive sound
quality and intensely charged songs that reveal Into Another as the sonic
behemoth they are. The CD and cassette versions are available from
Hollywood Records. Into Another finished a six week tour with Seaweed and
embarked on an ill-fated three week tour with Shelter and Shades Apart in
November. After the tour's first show in Burlington, Vermont, IA's
guitarist Peter injured his hand while loading equipment and the band was
forced to withdraw from the remaining dates. The damage is expected to
heal in time for their arena tour with White Zombie and The Ramones in
December.

The first video from "Seemless" is finished and should hit airwaves (or
cablewaves, if you will) sometime in December. It's directed by Fred
Stuhr, whose disturbing animation can be seen in the Tool videos. Mr.
Stuhr saw the album's cover art and, sensing kindred spirits, approached
the band about a collaboration for the track "Mutate me." Wild, wild
stuff.

The highly anticipated new Sense Field album "Building" is almost done.
It's presently being mixed by Andy Wallace and should be out in May. A
tour of the US and Europe will follow.

Yes it's true that Quicksand has split up for good. On October 18th they
took the stage for the last time at The Hollywood Grand. Already involved
in new projects, bandmembers had grown restless to explore fresh musical
directions. Perhaps four killer new bands will arise...

Thanks to everyone who made the Rev CMJ showcase at CBGB's in September a
mammoth success. On the sold-out bill were Into Another, Sensefield,
Shades Apart, Farside, Whirlpool, Texas is the Reason, State of the Nation,
and special guests Shift (courtesy of Equal Vision Records). To borrow a
phrase, the show ROCKED. Eyewitnesses report that the emotional pitch of
Sensefield's performance moved several audience members to tears. Shades
Apart shed a few tears when they discovered their van had been burglarized
in front of the club. Luckily all their equipment was inside, where it
could only be stolen one piece at a time through the front door. (Actually,
only the theft of one Marshall head was attempted in this manner and the
would-be felon was literally chased down by the CBGB's doorman.)

Whirlpool is in the studio working on a new album. Look for this one to
spotlight Rachel's vocals more as the band continues to evolve.

On the heels of their summer tour with Engine Kid, Iceburn has already
completed their new Double LP, "Meditevolutions" slated for release in
February 1996. You know Iceburn. You know they won't let you down. Start
harrassing stores now.

For those in the vicinity of Salt Lake, you can see and hear Iceburn live
in Provo every second Wednesday of the month at The Station, 117
University. Shows start at 8:30. Every third Wednesday is Dirge Trio
(featuring three members of Iceburn -Doug, Dan and Gentry) also at the
Station.

State of the Nation finished from their US tour with Stanford Prison
Experiment and plans to tour again this spring.

Bedeviled by van break-ins (see above) and a failed transmission, Shades
Apart wrapped up a late summer tour with 7Seconds in San Francisco. They
drove directly back to the east coast to begin a tour supporting Shelter
and Into Another (see above) ending November 21st in Connecticut. The
Shades van was most recently broken into while the band played in Atlantic
City, but the pilfering rascal was caught in the act by local police, who
found his "looking for my Fender Stratocaster" alibi a little sketchy.
Police briefly interrupted Shades Apart in mid-set to break the news and
the show continued. Shades Apart is planning a tour for early winter. The
van is now outifitted with an impenetrable alarm system, so don't even
think about it.

Supertouch is playing their first dates in two years in December. Touring
Europe and parts of the US, they stress this isn't a "reunion," but more of
a continuance; picking up where they left off with 3/4 of the old lineup
intact. Their most recent record, "The Earth is Flat," is available from
Revelation. There is talk of an EP this winter. We'll keep you posted.

Here are all the current tour dates:
